Hello! I’m an all-round communications person with a background in multimedia journalism and content editing. I come from Scotland and I’m based in Berlin.
Throughout my career over the last 15+ years I’ve written and edited for a variety of publications including Grazia, Glamour, The Debrief, Refinery29, The Herald and Sunday Herald and Deutsche Welle, I’ve also contributed to BBC Radio Scotland and TV news show The Nine as a Germany correspondent. I am also a former editor of The Local Germany and I hosted and produced the Germany in Focus podcast.
As a freelancer I have moderated events, put together advertising and marketing campaigns and prepared press materials for clients including the Scottish Government in Germany.
Let me pause here and share my Substack newsletter. You’ll find me chatting about life in Berlin, being a freelancer, creativity and travel (among many other topics).
Here’s a bit more about my career history: I previously worked as a content editor, features writer and reporter at the Evening Express in Aberdeen, and as a reporter and columnist at the Evening Times, Herald and Sunday Herald newspapers in Glasgow.
As part of the International Journalists Programme (IJP), I worked as a foreign correspondent at Die Welt/N24 in Berlin in 2015.
I have covered social affairs, crime, gender issues, including violence against women, politics, culture and lifestyle stories. I have written extensively about refugees and have received awards for my coverage. Major events I’ve covered include various German, UK and Scottish elections, the 2014 Scottish independence referendum, and the Irish referendum on abortion.
I’m also interested in a wide range of other topics – from tech and travel to food (yes, I’ve even been a bread correspondent at one point!).
Please get in touch with any questions, comments or commissions by emailing rachel.loxton1@gmail.com or stop by for a chat on Instagram (@RachLoxton) where I’m often found talking about life in Germany.
“Beyond her well-established role in the international journalism industry, she is a trusted and valued figure within the Berlin expat community. Her voice carries tremendous weight and shapes opinion and discourse on a broad range of current issues.”
